Today, I went to Kabuki. Are you familiar with Kabuki? It is one of the traditional Japanese arts. Each Japanese character has a meaning: “Ka” means to sing, “bu” means to dance, and “ki” means to perform. It has been performed for over 400 years, dating back to the Edo period. Initially, it was performed by women, but as the number of female performers increased, theaters began to resemble pleasure quarters, leading to a decline in public morals, so it was banned.
Kabuki might be somewhat unfamiliar even to Japanese people because it is often perceived as expensive and difficult to appreciate. However, in reality, we can experience it for as low as one thousand yen. This time, I attended a performance and enjoyed it for 30 minutes for eight hundred yen. It was a perfect introduction for me.
Next time, I would like to go again wearing a kimono.

今日は歌舞伎を見に行ってきました。
歌舞伎って知っていますか？日本の伝統文化の一つです。それぞれの漢字には意味があり、歌は歌、舞は踊り、伎は演技という意味です。これは江戸時代から約400年以上にわたって上演されてきました。これは普通、歴史的背景から全て男が演じることになっています。女性が演じたものが起源ではあったのですが、女性の役者が増えたことで芝居小屋が遊郭のようになり、風紀が乱れたことから全て男性が演じるようになりました。
歌舞伎というと（私の主観かもしれませんが）高そう、難しそうというイメージが強く、日本人でさえもあまり親しみがないものかと思います。しかし実は、初心者向けに「一幕見席」（1幕だけ鑑賞できる席）も用意されており、なんと1000円以下から楽しめます。今回私はこの「一幕見席」で約30分800円の上演を楽しんできました。最初のデビューにはちょうどよく、内容・雰囲気含め満足度が高かったです。
今度は着物を着て公演にお出かけしたいです。
